This week has flown by, with most days feeling like they were the weekend, so I’m surprised to find it is actually, now, Sunday and weeknotes are due. Not much happened, in a good way.

We did go for a nice walk on a sunny Friday up the Cat’s Back. It was chilly and windy up there but looked great. And I did take my “proper” camera with me. It’s been so long since I used it that I’ve got out of practice with the 50mm lens and everything was a bit too close compared to my phone’s 26mm equivalent.

A photo looking along a grassy ridge. In the foreground is an icy puddle. Beyond where the ridge ends are fields and hills fading into a hazy atmosphere.

Were the photos better than ones I’d take with my phone? Maybe, in a way, but I enjoy the process more.

§ We watched Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl which was, as hoped for, great fun and beautifully done. Well done Jay, Chris, Peeky, and the vast majority of people who I can’t show off about knowing. I wonder sometimes whether, if I hadn’t had my head turned by the Internet 30 years ago, I’d still be living in Bristol, still making models for Aardman, or something similar. Who knows.

And we watched the two-part The Split: Barcelona which was a Christmas surprise, because I’d assumed that series was entirely over. Moving it to a beautiful and sunny location does make the show lean even more into some of its worst tendencies, exemplified by a few brief scenes in gauzy slow motion, with lens flare and plinky-plonky music playing while my eyes roll several times. But Nicola Walker and Stephen Mangan just about make it all worthwhile. I’d love a show that’s focused on their relationship, rather than the extended family, as they’re both great and have just the right balance of humour and relationship agonising.

§ I guess this coming week won’t be made up entirely of weekend days.
