  1. San Francisco Scapegoated for Silicon Valley’s Civic Blind Spot

Very good point from Peter Merholz: The poor planning (ie, car-centric, sprawling) of Silicon Valley is one reason for the current problems in (more appealingly planned, dense) San Francisco. A good example of the need for regional rather than town planning, I’d guess.

  2. The JR James Archive - Sets

The University of Sheffield’s planning archive has been digitised and put on Flickr. Post-war town and regional planning porn. (via @benterrett)

  3. Welcome to Toytown: what life is like in new-build Britain | Society | The Guardian

‘“It’s referred to as a village, but it’s an estate,” Terri insists. “The fact that it was all built at the same time means it’s an estate. Villages evolve, don’t they?”’

  4. Between the Lines - Features - Los Angeles magazine

Fascinating long article on the history of parking, parking meters, parking lots, parking costs, and how they all affect towns and cities. (via Kottke)

  5. Debunking the Cul-de-Sac - Design - The Atlantic Cities

Looking at the change of US city layouts from grids to increasingly dead-end cul-de-sacs. (via Tom Taylor)

  6. A 53% Surge in Poverty Rate Is Reshaping Suburbs - NYTimes.com

I’ve thought for years, decades, that when sprawling suburbs with few through roads stop being comfortably wealthy, their unlivableness is going to be horribly apparent. Dead ends in two senses.

  7. London Cycling Campaign | Campaigns | Key campaigns | Blackfriars | People-friendly Blackfriars

Pretty impressive graphics and animations for an alternative vision of a tricky junction, as competition for the official and protested-against plans.

  8. Scattered Satellites - Purdom, Abercrombie, Hilberseimer, MARS - Links

Click the thumbnail of the 1943 ‘The County of London Plan’. Lovely, lovely map of London’s rough areas, as queried earlier (thanks Blech).

  9. CBRD » Histories » Ringways » Background » Wartime plans

I like the colours of the County Of London Plan, 1943.

  10. Utopia London

Awesome-looking film, about post-war modernist housing development in London. There’s a screening near Farringdon on 14 Dec. Also, where’s the map in the ‘About’ section from? (via City of Sound)

  11. Human landscapes in SW Florida - The Big Picture - Boston.com

Every single aerial photo is stunning, go look. Photos of housing developments, many undeveloped. I wouldn’t want to live in any of them. (via Kottke)

  12. YouTube - BBC Town Planning Programme circa 1961

Featuring the Barbican area, London Wall, etc. A shame the clip is so short. More, more!

  13. Chris Heathcote: anti-mega: Saving Britain’s Past

This really is a good programme, with a nice balance of old and modern. And no struggling to make stories over-dramatic, like too many documentaries these days.

  14. County of london plan 1945 - a set on Flickr

“excerpts from a small booklet explaining the ideas behind the official County of London Plan.” Lovely.
