  1. Do the verdicts in the trial of the Colston 4 signal something wrong with our jury system? 10 things you should know – The Secret Barrister

A really clear description of all the possible reasons the verdict could have been “not guilty”. (via FaveJet)

    A relentlessly-focused campaign. I approve! (via @gwire)

  3. The Exquisitely English (and Amazingly Lucrative) World of London Clerks - Bloomberg

A good insight into a world I knew nothing about. Now I know who those people are pushing carts of boxes of papers, who I see on the way to work. (via @iamdanw)

  4. Diary by Peter Pomerantsev (London Review of Books)

Starts as a fascinating brief description of sistema, the pervasive Russian corruption, ends up starting to show how London is now a place where this is legitimised. Laundering crookedness.

  5. Potlatch: 20 public-spirited lawyers could change the world

Lawyers are the creators of a future in which the rest of us must live. By Will Davies (it doesn’t say anywhere on the page). (via @moleitau)

  6. Getting Nearer and Nearer by David Cole | The New York Review of Books

Just for the bit about how the courts’ “job is to enforce the law, even if, and especially when, public opinion is against it. … Democracy is not particularly good at protecting the rights of minorities. … [Courts] will sometimes make decisions that result in short-term backlash.”

  7. Huhne and Pryce went to jail despite their privilege, not because of it

Yes, all this. All the “oh, they don’t deserve it, jail will be so hard for them,” talk makes me so angry given the ludicrous sentences given for some other things that we must apparently be “robust” and “firm” in dealing with. (via @matlock)

  8. The stupid cookie law is dead at last | Silktide blog

“History has shown us that whenever a law opposes the will of the people, it doesn’t tend to do much. It may have been illegal to tape songs off the radio, but there’s little appetite from police officers to cart schoolchildren off to prison for it. And so it is here.” (via @tomskitomski)

  9. The Gay Path Through the Courts by David Cole | The New York Review of Books

Subscribers only unfortunately. But I liked this for its descriptions of how the Supreme Court rules on things, and how cases that are ostensibly about a particular crime are used to force a decision on constitutional issues. Also about how the Court tries (ideally) to follow, rather than lead, society.

  10. Trevor Kavanagh learns a hard lesson about human rights and due process « Richard Wilson’s blog

This is what I thought (only written much better) when I read about Trevor Kavanagh’s whining about the arrests of Sun journalists this morning. Live by the sword… (via @matlock)

Coincidentally timely brief guide to UK/EU trademarking. (via mildlydiverting)

Some interesting bits about the development of laws and reforms in 19th century England.

  13. LRB · Gareth Peirce · America’s Non-Compliance

Good description of quite how scary America is in terms of lack of civil rights for those accused of crimes (never mind convicted), whether in America or not.

  14. Contract Templates, Sample Contracts, Legal Contracts Business : Contract Store

Might be handy sometime. Off-the-shelf contracts for many things.
