@simonw I think the flaw in this analogy is that the alternative to making yourself get to grips with a weird and unfamiliar fishing boat, is to not go across the Channel at all, safe in the knowledge that actually no one will die. Plus, you’ll have more time to do other things.

@simonw Also “First choose an instance” is obviously a huge hurdle. Having “First pick one of these things you don’t yet fully understand based on not enough information” is not the ideal start to a sign up flow.

I know why it’s there but you can’t dismiss most people being turned off.

@simonw I think you’re dismissing how difficult many people find any change of UI. In some ways it’s even harder when something is “a bit like” something else but is fundamentally different. And saying “It’s like email except…” or “It’s like blogs except…” doesn’t always help.

@felixthehat At the moment I’m using Toot! on iOS, but there doesn’t seem to be that much difference between it and the official client or Metatext (the only others I’ve tried). Haven’t looked for a macOS client - I just use the web.
