@phl I think I may just try the mic socket, given the tapes are 10-30 years old, and just stuff taped off the radio. Less than hi-fi.

@phl Is the mic socket that bad? (I’ve never really used it.)

So many moving parts and electronics. And a couple of rubber bands are its weak point. Impossible to replace without complete disassembly.

Finally about to digitise old cassettes…and find the tape deck that’s sat on my desk for years is useless because of a perished rubber band.
