It’s erosion - the cliffs at Walton have been gradually disappearing into the sea for years. On the plus side this makes the beach a great place to find fossils that were in the cliffs. On the (larger) negative side this means the Naze and the tower are in danger of eventually disappearing altogether.
There’s a Naze Protection Society which, I assume, is campaigning for more sea defences, but their website www.savingthenaze.com/ doesn’t seem to be working for me right now.
